frame | how yoga made me more willing to smile
How we choose to frame the world can open or close up so much of our experience.
frame
noun
a rigid structure that surrounds something such as a picture, door, or windowpane.
If you tell me to smile then you’re very unlikely to receive a smile from me. When told to smile my internal response is ‘who are you bruv? About smile, move.’ If the context is posing for a picture then that’s different, though I don’t like being told to smile in that situation either.
I’m not a fan of being told what to do at the best of times. I am especially not a fan of being told what to do with my face. Perhaps it’s rooted in the Jamaican household I was brought up in. I was often told as a child to fix my face, meaning stop sulking or looking dour.
I will suffer these things from my parents. I may be an adult but I will be their child forever, so if they tell me to fix my face I’ll fix my face. However if you didn’t birth and or raise me, then I’m not trying to hear you tell me to smile.
